In the early days making a living was not an easy task. This wild and desolate area was home to hardy souls who fished, farmed, and scraped by the best they could. For a woman life could be especially difficult.

In the mid 1860's, when Zippy Lewis was in her thirties, her husband sailed out to sea and never returned. She was then forced to make a living foraging on the beach lands. Sometimes a shipwreck replenished her supply of foodstuffs. Her principle source of income however was "beach money" found buried in the sand. In the 1820's a ship, laden with silver coins, was wrecked along the Delmarva coast. As the years passed by these coins would sometimes wash up on the beach, especially after a strong nor'easter. During the Civil War period these coins were accepted as legal tender by Worcester County merchants. She would exchange these coins for purchases in the stores of Berlin.
